Now see, this is just ridiculous. Here we go again with the gimmie gimmie. Since everyone’s budget is slashed, active duty is yanking equipment out from under reserve units and Guard detachments. Here’s what’s going on:
Army leaders are trying to get the National Guard to draft 192 Apache strike helicopters into active duty units. The plan, schedules to execute by 2019, will streamline existing systems, both adding readiness in light of recent budget cuts and actually saving over a billion dollars annually. This is all being done by retiring TH-67s and Kiowas and supplanting them with the Apache.
They’re going to trade Apaches for Blackhawks.
The Apache has considerable scout and reconnaissance potential, and can increase both readiness and strike capability in active units. Blackhawks are more adept at airlift, making them more suited for Guard work here at home.
But the Guard has the Apaches, and Apaches are mad cool. You do the math.
Now, boys. You HAVE helicopters. Both of you. Seriously. Between the two of ya, there are 3,775 of them.
- 690 Apaches
- 2,135 Black Hawks
- 533 Chinooks
- 417 Lakotas
