OK, so now instead of the Ground Combat Vehicle, the Pentagon is asking for development plans form the nation’s top military contractors for a new new toy.
The working name is the “Ultra-Light Combat Vehicle,” or ULCV, which will be air-droppable. Yes, an airborne assault vehicle. It will be ideally deployed with a… wait for it… light infantry brigade, and the project heads are looking for the following qualities according to military.com:
- Hot-zone transportable by Chinook helicopter in combat configuration
- Hot-zone transportable by Black Hawks in combat configuration
- Air-droppable from C-130 and C-17 aircraft in combat configuration
So, it needs to be quickly deployable in a firefight, but it also needs to be able to skydive and land in one piece. PLUS, it has to be a badass. It will need to
- Carry over a ton and a half, including a nine-man infantry squad and their gear
- Range at least 300 miles on internal fuel
- Be all-terrain and urban-combat capable
Ya want one yet? Damn right you do. This, my friends, would be the General Lee of combat vehicles. But chances are that you’ll never get to even so much as drive one, much less have one of your own.
